There’s something special about wearing a piece of jewelry that feels like it tells a story. These Bohemian Copper Butterfly Earrings with Amethyst are more than just accessories—they are little works of art, made with care and intention. Whether you’re drawn to the symbolism of butterflies, the deep purple beauty of amethyst, or the warm glow of copper, these earrings are designed to bring a touch of nature-inspired elegance to your everyday style. Actually, I wanted to try if I could make lovely tiny butterflies and the process turned out to be a great fun!

The Process: Handmade with Heart

Every pair of these earrings starts as raw copper wire, carefully shaped and hammered to create delicate butterfly charms. At first, I made a lot of mistakes while trying to make charms. They’re simple but the wire has to be bent carefully so that the right ended overlap the right elements.

The 4mm amethyst gemstones are then chosen for their rich purple color, adding a subtle yet striking contrast against the copper. Amethyst is known as the birthstone of February, often associated with clarity, protection, and calm energy. And it’s extremely beautiful!

Once assembled, the earrings go through an oxidation process that enhances the natural depth of the copper, giving them an earthy, rustic patina. Instead of using harsh chemical patinas, I expose them to ammonia vapors for a short time. Finally, they are polished just enough to highlight the details while keeping that raw, handmade charm intact. I love this part of the process—watching each piece come to life, knowing that no two pairs will ever be exactly the same.

Lastly, I protect them with Renaissance wax which protects them from easy further oxidation. Patina will continue to develop – that’s one of the natural qualities of copper – but much more slowly.

How to Care for Your Copper Earrings

Copper is a beautiful, living metal that changes over time, developing a natural patina. If you love the aged, antique look, you can let the earrings darken naturally. However, if you prefer the bright, polished look, a quick clean with a lemon juice and salt mixture or a jewelry polishing cloth will bring back the shine. Just be sure to store them in a dry place when not in use to prevent excessive oxidation.

Since these earrings feature natural amethyst gemstones, it’s best to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or harsh chemicals, as that could dull the stone’s vibrant color.

A Gift with Meaning

These earrings would make a thoughtful birthday gift for a friend or sister, especially if they were born in February or simply love butterflies and nature-inspired jewelry. Handmade jewelry carries a special kind of energy—knowing that each piece was crafted with patience and love makes it even more meaningful to wear or give as a gift.
